Good afternoon New York City Metro! I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful weather! We experienced sunshine and temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s across Manhattan and inland sections. Temperatures have struggled to reach 60 in coastal areas of Long Island. But it’s this dry weather that is causing problems. As you are aware, we’ve had little overall precipitation since the start of 2012. This results in very dry soil, so any gusts of wind can help spark brush fires! In fact, over the past week, we have been getting reports of brush fires throughout the Metro. Statin Island was the location of a brush the other day, and crews have been battling a brush fire along the northbound side of the New Jersey Turnpike in Newark, NJ, near Newark Liberty International Airport! Luckily, both of these fires have been relatively small and not too widespread. The point is we all need to use caution when burning and any smokers should be careful and disposing cigarettes. Some showers and thunderstorms (non-severe) tonight will make the ground a bit more moist, so brush fires won’t be as big of a threat tomorrow as they are today, despite similar, if not warmer, temperatures! Enjoy your evening!
